Sitting is Killing You!

March 23, 2018

I once had a boss that would set a timer and every hour would say, "Ok, time to stand up and take a stretch break."

She was motivated to start this trend after reading an article which declared that sitting was killing us.

Most of us have jobs where sitting at a desk for long stretches of time is inevitable. Studies have shown that average daily sitting time for adults is between 9 and 10 hours per day. Our bodies were not designed to sit for prolonged periods of time – we are meant to be mobile!

Sitting for long periods of time is a health risk. It could increase the risk of obesity and early death even if you are regularly exercising. So, going to the gym in the evenings doesn't counteract the hours of uninterrupted sitting you do during the day.

Good news! You can counteract sitting. By breaking up sitting into stretches of only 30 minutes at a time, you are doing yourself a huge favor. The article says that people who sat for less than 30 minutes at a time had the lowest risk of early death.

A good habit to get into is to set a timer for 30 minutes and stand up to stretch, walk to the bathroom, or fill up your water bottle, every half hour when the timer goes off.

I've certainly fallen out of the habit of taking breaks, but there's no time like the present to start again.

How about right now?

Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
