How often do you think to yourself, “Man, I need a vacation!”? I’ve thought about it a lot especially during these dreary winter months.
Interestingly, for as much as we fantasize about vacation, most of us don’t take advantage of vacation time. On average, American’s give up half of their vacation days. But why?
Some people fear getting behind on their work, others have a belief that no one else can handle their work while they’re away, and some don’t think they can be disconnected. Even when on vacation, two-thirds of us work and one-quarter of us feel like we’re expected to know what's going on in the office. I found this article from MarketWatch and this article from CNN Money very interesting when researching vacation habits.
With all the advances in technology, such as email on our mobile devices and WiFi being everywhere, working on the go and even from different time zones is becoming more effortless.
Even though it’s easy to plug in from anywhere, there are piles of research studies that indicate that taking a vacation from work lowers stress levels, helps maintain a healthy work-life balance, and boosts productivity when you return to the office.
So next time you fantasize about that vacation, why don’t you take it one step further – take a break and go on that vacation! Chances are you’ll come back refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.
