Prism of Trust

December 22, 2017

I was driving recently, and a car abruptly switched into my lane causing me to slam on my brakes. Of course, this didn’t go over well, and I momentarily became angry at the other driver. This happens a million times a day all over the world. Why?

The reason is because in the absence of trust, we assume the worst. I didn’t know what caused that driver to switch lanes and without that information, I assumed he was an inexperienced driver who was distracted. But it’s also possible he had car issues, didn’t know where he was going, or needed to get off at the next exit.

If I had known “why,” would I have gotten as mad? I don’t think I would have.

What if instead of always assuming the worst when we don’t have all the information, we give people the benefit of the doubt?

When viewed not suspiciously, but rather through a prism of trust, the client who constantly changes their mind, the driver who suddenly switches lanes, or the co-worker who doesn’t communicate clearly, becomes much easier to handle. How much stress and anger could we save ourselves if we extended some trust in these situations?

We may not always understand why a decision was made, but let’s all start trusting that it was made with good intentions.

Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
