Recently, I was listening to a presentation given by an industry expert in the area of reliability and maintenance best practices. What struck me about this presentation was what was said when the presenter was asked about what maintenance software tools he recommended. He said, “It doesn’t matter. All of the software is the same and any would work.” I thought to myself, REALLY?
I could tell that the speaker was very uneasy when it came to the subject of software. I was sure that he had not “done the time” in this area, and without a deep understanding of the topic he really did not want to talk about it. But, why?
I know the simple answer to him is that software doesn’t matter; that in his line of work it’s better to be agnostic and to not pick a side. But software does matter, and over the next 4 weeks, I’ll share some reasons why I think you’ll agree with me…
First, not all software tools are created equal.
We constantly hear the statistics that over 2/3’s of all CMMS/EAM installations end in failure or fail to meet the expectations of the management team. We also hear that developing software is not for the faint of heart and the cost of developing, maintaining, and enhancing said software can be a staggering number.
When it comes to your CMMS/EAM system, having the right tools, functionality, and capabilities built in is a must when integrating the software into the work practices of the business. Lack of quality programming can be a project killing no matter how hard the implementation team works.
Be sure to check back next week for another reason why software does matter.
