I am not sure why this quarantine is making me have flashbacks to my younger days but the other day I was thinking about the dumb game we used to play in middle school called Opposite Day. I am sure everyone has played some version of this game or used it as a less than witty comeback to some 6th grade insult.
Other person: You have cooties
You: Haha it’s Opposite Day so I don’t have cooties!
What does any of this have to do with a-Minute? Absolutely nothing. Haha, Opposite Day!
Defining great can be hard. Have you ever tried to define what a great leader or great employee looks like? It’s hard. You know what isn’t hard? Defining a bad leader or a bad employee. I bet your minds are already racing with a list of things for each.
In the true spirit of Opposite Day, let’s discuss what leadership isn’t. Leadership isn’t:
What you can do
Where you’ve been
How much experience you have
How smart you are
What you can do for yourself
Leadership at its foundation is winning at relationships and results based on trust. And in another opposite day surprise, you are not entitled to anyone’s trust. You are granted trust based on others’ experience of you. Does your character, connections, and competence make others want to trust you and follow you, or does it do the opposite?
Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
