Is your Greatest Strength Your Greatest Weakness?

Is your greatest strength your greatest weakness?

Think about it. Are you so reliant in one area that you make yourself vulnerable? This is the question posed in the book David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell.

The story of David and Goliath is a well-known tale about an unlikely victor against the greatest of odds. Stories like this exist throughout history in war and sports competitions. Think of the British army during the American Revolution. No army in the world could line up and defeat them. Their reliance on this style of war made them vulnerable to the guerrilla warfare used by the under-dog Continental Army.

In sports, Rhonda Rousey was the most dominant female fighter ever. If she could take you down, she was probably going to win. In the process of getting her opponent to the ground, she was willing to take a couple punches, that is until she met someone with the punching power to knock her out.

Now, think about yourself. Is what you do best, holding you back? Are you great at getting your point across in an email and forget to have an occasional face to face conversation? Do you figure things out quicker than others and fail to fully communicate properly to your team?

Take some time and reflect on your approach at work. Is your greatest strength your greatest weakness?
