What Motivates You?

While running one morning with my dog, Denny, I was feeling particularly motivated. I woke up early, meaning I went to bed early, got ready to run, got Denny ready to run, left my house (without procrastinating), and completed a good run. I did all of this because I was motivated to improve myself. But about half way through my run I started thinking about my dog. Denny is one of the three dogs that my family has adopted. She has the capability to run much faster than myself. There is no speed that I have ever run that could keep up with her when she is motivated. She is capable of amazing athletic feats that are impossible for me to accomplish. So why was I pulling her this morning? Why was

The Deer of Lifetime

A few weeks ago, I harvested the biggest deer of my lifetime. I have been hunting for my entire life and have taken a lot of deer, but this one was different - magnificent and beautiful. I spent the morning with my best friend of 35 years doing something we love. It was a genuinely great day. But it almost did not happen. Here is the irony: I did not want to go on this excursion. With work on my mind and chores around the house that needed to be done, I was finding it hard to get excited about going hunting. When you hunt, you have to get up early, hike into the woods, sit in an uncomfortable seat, and wait for a deer that may or may not come. It is much easier to sleep late, cut the grass,

Natalie Kent Joins Advoco Team

Advoco is excited to announce that Natalie Kent has joined the team as an Account Executive. In her role, Natalie will be working closely with the sales team to aid in customer relations. Natalie began her EAM career with Infor on the Analyst Relations team. From there she moved on to an associate project management role, and ultimately, she had a role on the sales team. It was during her tenure with Infor that Natalie met Marty Osborn, partner at Advoco, and the rest of the Advoco team. Following her years at Infor, Natalie spent a period of time working on EAM and non-EAM projects at transit organizations across North America. During this time, she began to realize that she was looking for

How Do You Fix It?

What’s the worst feeling in the world? For many of us, it’s having to tell your boss, or worse yet, your customer, that you and your team have made a mistake. This recently happened to me, and I’d like to share the story with you. This mistake wasn’t just about the work that was done, but the team was not going to be able to make the expected deadlines. I knew we had let the customer down, and I dreaded making the phone call explaining what had happened. But, I knew that phone call was important. The call went like this: Me: “We have made a terrible mistake. This project isn’t going to make the deadline. We are currently fixing it and I will keep you updated on everything as it happens.” Cus

You Only Get 18 Summers

Earlier this summer, someone shared an article with me making the point that as a parent, you only get 18 summers with your kids. Only 18 summers to help your child learn the wonders of sprinklers, s’mores, pool parties, popsicles, fireworks, and all of the other fun adventures that make you nostalgic for the countless memories from your own childhood. When you’re in the day-to-day of parenting, it can be hard to remember to cherish the small moments that will make up those fleeting memories. When I read the article, it really inspired me to be more intentional about how we spent each of those 18 summers. On a day-to-day basis, this meant slowing down to take evening walks to the park or tea
