Making Edits

I draw a lot of my a-Minute inspiration from social media, so I guess it isn’t all bad! Recently I was scrolling my Instagram feed when I came across a quote: You can always edit a bad page – you just can’t edit a blank one. This quote is especially poignant when it comes to motivating myself to write an a-Minute, but it’s true of our everyday lives as well. How many times have you thought about starting some big task, only to be deterred because it seems too daunting? We’ve all been there. Starting that big garage clean out, tackling the new project at work, reorganizing our closet. When the task seems too large, sometimes it seems easier to avoid altogether and not risk doing something wro

Are You Angry or Happy Ectoplasm?

I recently re-watched the movie Ghostbusters 2, a blast from the past from my childhood. While watching the movie I had an interesting realization. For those of you 30 years behind on 80’s classics, this is your *spoiler alert.* My memory of the movie was that the pink slime, or ectoplasm, was evil and caused the takeover of New York City by ghosts. Earlier in my career I was working as a network admin for an investment bank, and I managed to bring down the network for 30 seconds during the trading day by fixing what I thought was an innocuous switch connection. By most companies’ standards that sort of network interruption would barely be noticeable, but when trading screens freeze for 30 seconds people notice. I could have dodged the issue and blamed a nebulous “networking glitch,” b

Take A Chance

Recently, I was speaking with an ex-Clemson football player who played for the Tigers many years ago. We were chatting about the National Championship game. Going into the game, none of the experts were giving Clemson much of a chance. I asked this former player if he would prefer to lose a close semi-final game or get blown out in the championship game, and I was surprised by his answer. He said his coach used to tell the team that if you give it everything you have and you fail, you will have one night of bad sleep. But if you don’t give it everything you have and fail, you will think about it for the rest of your life. We talked a little longer and went our separate ways, but I kept think
