What’s Your Personality Profile

At Advoco, we take a DISC profile test when we’re hired, which assesses various aspects of our personality. We proudly display the results on our desks, and it helps us to communicate with each other effectively. There are many personality assessments available from a variety of sources. While they should be taken with a grain of salt, the idea behind them is important. We each have unique ways of doing things and thinking about things. Understanding how you receive information and how others want to receive information is critical, especially in the workplace. Miscommunications can slow us down and make our jobs more difficult, and they can also hurt our personal relationships if we are not

Don’t Throw the Baby Out with the Bath Water

There was a saying when I was growing up, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” Back in the wash tub days, I guess it was common to lose the baby in the suds and throw it out with the dirty water. Aside from child safety, I think the point of the idiom is to not mistakenly toss aside something precious when getting rid of some waste. I have used this reference several times in my career to keep me from making a decision I would regret because of a temporary situation. There are tough times in every project. Sometimes we have technical issues, or maybe it’s another hang up, but more often than not it is people. As Marty says, “Business would be easy if it were not for people.” Somet

Authentic and Generous

In Dale Partridge’s book, People Over Profit, he highlights the seven beliefs of a people-over-profit company. Authenticity Attracts and Generosity Returns are two of the core values. Have you ever found yourself in a situation that was far from what attracted you in the first place? Perhaps you started working for a company, or supported a nonprofit organization, then learned that the entity was not living the message being portrayed. Or you transitioned into a new role that was ruled by conformity and felt urged to act a certain way. If an organization is true to their story, it can be extremely powerful. But it must be genuine. Where authenticity attracts authenticity, a false context doe

5 Ways to Beat the Winter Slump

Motivational slumps happen to the best of us. Especially in the dreary winter months before we get the full force of the spring sunshine. Find yourself in a slump? Here are some tips to help re-motivate yourself: 1. Change your mindset A lot of your slump is in your head. Our productivity has a lot to do with our emotions and how we're feeling. Even if you don't feel optimistic or you aren’t in a good mood, surround yourself with positive, like-minded individuals and try to change your perspective by looking at the bigger picture. 2. Find incentives Create rewards for yourself. For example, if I finish this project by the end of this week, I'm going to treat myself to going to a bowl of ice

Stress is a Credit Card for Energy

In Big Potential, author Shawn Achor uses an analogy about stress. He says that, “Stress is a credit card for energy; you’re going to pay it back, but with interest.” In some instances, stress can be a positive thing to be leveraged. However, if you are stressed out about work, family, or life in general, it’s important to know how to manage that stress. Achor goes on to explain that the extension of the credit card metaphor is that “mindfulness is a credit card for resilience.” The more you spend on mindfulness, the more rewards you get. When it comes to avoiding stress and being more mindful, Achor offers the following advice: Create a mental stronghold of positivity Take a minute to refle
